I have a client next week in Kansas so I decided to fly in early to explore since I didn’t have a chance the last time I was here. My flight left at 8:50am, so I got up at 5am to get ready and finish packing. Then I drove to the airport for the flight to Wichita. The flight was only about 2 hours, so it didn’t take long before I arrived. I then got a rental car and drove to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which was about an hour and a half from the airport. I wanted to go to Tallgrass Prairie because it is a U.S. National Park. I went to the visitor center first since they usually have a map. It was here that I finally broke down and bought the National Park book. Since I had the book, I got my first stamp showing the day I came to visit. I also paid for the sticker pack so I could have the official sticker. On my way out of the visitor center, this random guy kept talking to me. He used to be an electrician who checked the phone poles so I think he was alone most of the time going from pole to pole. Finally I used the excuse of having to go to the bathroom to break away. While he went to see the site, I went to the bathroom and then went out.
It was another 1.5 hour drive to Hutchinson. In Hutchinson is Strataca, the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. Strataca is also one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. I signed up for the tour. I had to wait a little while, but the tour finally started. It was just me and 2 other guys. We had a safety talk and had to put on a hardhat, and then we were ready to go down into the mine. To get there, we had to get in an elevator to go 650 feet below the surface. The elevator wasn’t a typical elevator that is lit up and has music. It was pitch dark and very loud. Luckily it didn’t take long to get to the bottom and we were free to explore.
After that portion of the tour, we ended up in the gift shop. I looked around at the different items while I waited for the tram to come pick us up. The tram is a lead car pulling several smaller cars that seat 2 people. I originally sat in one of the cars, but then they had a group of 2 that needed a spot so I moved to sit up front with the driver.
